Background
The illustration focuses on realism, carefully balancing technical precision with emotional storytelling. By avoiding stylized or exaggerated elements, the work emphasizes the subtle details that communicate the room's history and the aftermath of a dramatic event.
Development
I was inspired by the gritty, post-apocalyptic setting of the Fallout game series. My goal was to reimagine my college dorm room as if it existed within that dystopian universe. I began by establishing a strong visual direction, creating a mood board to capture the desired post-apocalyptic aesthetic, which helped solidify the overall tone and feel.
I then carefully planned the layout, establishing vanishing points and construction guidelines to ensure a realistic, three-dimensional space, allowing me to build out the room's architecture and spatial relationships.
I employed sophisticated lighting and shading techniques to create a sense of depth and atmosphere, while using a muted, earthy color palette and intricate textural details to reinforce the sense of decay and abandonment within the space.
Final Thoughts
The end result is a compelling, immersive illustration that transports the viewer into a post-apocalyptic interpretation of a familiar, everyday space, showcasing my technical mastery and creative vision.
This project pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me advance my skills in composition, color theory, and light and shadow. The technical mastery and creative vision I developed through this process have been valuable additions to my toolkit.
